Online vs Printable Word Search Puzzles: Which Should You Use?
Both formats work. This guide shows how they differ, when to use each, and how to print any Quest4Word puzzle.
Do you solve on a screen or on paper? Both work, and Quest4Word supports both. Here is how they differ and when to use each.

| Screen needed | Yes | No, once printed |
| Best for | Quick breaks, phones, tracking progress | Classrooms, travel, long car rides, screen-free time |
When to choose online
- You want a quick puzzle on a phone or tablet.
- You enjoy seeing found words marked automatically.
- You want a score and streak. The full game saves progress on your device and unlocks puzzles in order.
When to choose printable
- You are in a classroom, waiting room or car.
- You want a screen-free activity for children.
- You prefer pencil and paper, or need larger print.
How to print a Quest4Word puzzle
- Open any puzzle from the puzzle hub, such as Animals Easy Puzzle 1.
- Press Print this puzzle. The page switches to a clean black-on-white layout with the grid and word list.
- Choose your printer, or choose Save as PDF to keep a copy.
- For an answer key, press Show answers first and print again.
If the grid prints too small, set the page scale to 100% and portrait orientation. If you want to save ink, choose black and white.
Free online word search by theme and level
Quest4Word has 240 free puzzles: eight themes, each with ten Easy, ten Medium and ten Hard puzzles. Choose a theme such as Animals or Space, then pick a level. Not sure which level? Read our difficulty guide. Every puzzle can be played online or printed, so you can switch between the two.
Comfort and accessibility
Paper has no glare and no battery, and you control the size by choosing the paper and printer settings. On screen you can zoom, but the grid is played by dragging with a mouse or finger. If dragging is awkward, print the puzzle and circle the words with a pencil instead.
Focus and screen time
A printed puzzle has no notifications to pull you away, which many people prefer for a calm break. For children, a printed puzzle is also an easy way to add a screen-free activity to the day.
Cost and ink
A puzzle is one page. Print in black and white and draft quality to save ink, and print the answers only when you need them.
Using both
You can mix formats: print a puzzle for the car, then open the same puzzle on a phone to check the answers with the show-answers button. Each puzzle page lists its words, so you always have the list to hand.
